ViduTech

A 3D mapping system for IDF ammunition inventory — replacing manual counting with machine vision in environments where accuracy is non-negotiable.

[Project Image]

Challenge

Design a ruggedized scanning system that can accurately count and classify ammunition inventory in 3D, operating in field conditions with no controlled lighting, and produce results fast enough to replace manual counting in operational use.

Our Role

Hardware design of the scanning head, optical and illumination system, ruggedized housing, and mounting system. Integration with ViduTech's vision processing pipeline.

Outcome

System delivered and validated against IDF acceptance criteria. Operational deployment in logistics chain with counting accuracy exceeding manual baseline.

About the project

Ammunition inventory management in the IDF is a critical logistics function — inaccurate counts have real operational consequences. The traditional approach is manual counting, which is slow, prone to human error, and ties up personnel who could be doing other things. ViduTech's solution is a 3D machine vision system that scans ammunition stacks and generates accurate counts in seconds.

The hardware challenge was to build an optical system that works in the real world — not in a laboratory. Field environments mean variable lighting, dust, temperature extremes, and rough handling. The scanner needed to produce consistent depth maps regardless of ambient conditions.

We designed a structured-light illumination system with controlled wavelength that suppresses ambient light interference, housed in a rugged enclosure that meets military handling standards. The scanning head was designed for both tripod-mounted static use and handheld portable operation, with the same optical geometry in both configurations. Thermal management of the illumination system was a significant design challenge — sustained operation in hot field conditions requires active cooling within a compact housing envelope.

The final system was validated against the IDF's acceptance test protocol, achieving counting accuracy that exceeded the manual baseline across all tested ammunition types and stack configurations.
